MedStar came to the rescue again this Thanksgiving, but the rides today weren’t to the hospital – but back to their homes instead. For the seventh year they’ve provided transportation and medical care free of charge for patients to spend their holiday at home with family; rather than the nursing home or hospital.
For many Thanksgiving is simply another day stuck in a nursing home or hospital; going home is all but a dream.
For some lucky people, like Edward Brauner he was able to spend Thanksgiving with his family at home, thanks to MedStar. The 86-year-old explained, “I can’t get out at all … I’m kind of behind the fence.”
For the past seven months, he has been unable to leave his room at the Fort Worth nursing home as his Parkinson’s disease took a turn for the worse.
For Brauner and others like him, this special trip home is a memory they’ll forever cherish.
