“Tacos” Named The Official Food Of The Presidential Election

Tacos are going to take over the world, one presidential election at a time.

The delicious cuisine has definitely made its mark this political season, spanning across issues of illegal immigrancy, including Marco Gutierrez of Latinos for Trump saying on MSNBC that if America doesn’t quell this immigrant issue, “you’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.”  Doesn’t really sound like a bad idea.

Exactly why have tacos become a metaphor for everything we’re fighting for in this country?  Bettina Stern, co-owner of Georgetown’s seasonal taco shop Chaia, has a theory; she says, “I feel like tacos, they’re right there at the top of everyone’s brain.  I mean who doesn’t like a taco?”  She continues by calling tacos the “great equalizer.”  “Tacos have a universal appeal whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican.”

Food writer Nick Kindelsperger has spent years writing about and analyzing Chicago’s booming taqueira market.  He disagrees with the notion that tacos have a universal appeal, and that they are an extremely divisive food.  “Tacos are used as a pejorative on one side and on the other they’re used as an incredible positive.  There’s no in-between, you’re either for or against, which reflects society quite accurately at the moment.”

President Obama said at a recent campaign stop in Ohio that the public should be as excited to vote for Hillary Clinton as they are when ordering a taco.  Speaking of Taco Bell’s free taco promotion during the World Series, he told the crowd, “If you can find the time to get a free taco, then you can find the time to go vote.  You can vote and then go get your taco.  It’s like a combo meal.”
