A cousin of NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade was pushing her child in a stroller near the school she was intending to register her children. Nykea Aldridge recently moved to the area on Chicago’s south side, notorious for its high amount of gun violence and homicide rates. Unfortunately, Aldridge became another innocent victim of the violence, as she was caught by a bullet fired by two men aiming for a third. She was not the intended target, and she had no connection to the three men involved.
Dwyane Wade tweeted his heartbreak, and his call to action, not only for his native Chicago where he recently signed with the Bulls after a stellar career in Miami, but country-wide, where gun violence has claimed yet another innocent bystander.
Wade’s mother, Jolinda, spoke for her family outside the hospital room where Nykea was pronounced dead saying, “We’re still going to try to help and empower people like the one who senselessly shot my niece in the head. We’re going to try to help these people to transform their minds and give them a different direction.”
