Washington, D.C. Pushes for Statehood and New Name

A statehood commission has decided, “Washington, D.C.” would be renamed to “New Columbia”; should their bid to become the 51st state wins.

The District of Columbia has long pushed for statehood; however, recently it’s gained a lot of momentum with President Obama and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s support.

“New Columbia” is was voted on and approved back in 1982, during previous statehood talks.

While most of D.C. support becoming a state, few agree the new name should be “New Columbia.”

The Washingtonian wrote: “If D.C. is going to convince members of Congress from the rest of the country that it should be a state, it needs to offer a much better name, and not just because New Columbia would create some ugly postal-code confusion with North Carolina.” They argued, “it needs a name that calls back to its geography, history or culture.”

According to Fox News, voters will have the chance to vote on a different name in November.

What do you think the new name should be, should they even be a state?
