New research suggests that having a few extra pounds may actually extend your life.

CBS News is reporting that science has discovered that being slightly overweight makes someone less likely to die a premature death. Big emphasis on the word slightly. Participants who were considered obese were significantly more likely to die than their normal or overweight counterparts.

Study author Katherine Flegal thinks the prolonged life of overweight people may have to do with their healthcare habits. “Maybe heavier people present to the doctor earlier, or get screened more often. Heavier people may be more likely to be treated according to guidelines, or fat itself may be cardioprotective, or someone who is heavier might be more resilient and better able to stand a shock to their system,” Flegal said.

Long story short keep a little beer belly, but try not to keep packing on the pounds.
