The woman who held the Guinness World Record for being the world’s oldest person has passed away.

The Huffington Post is reporting that Besse Cooper died peacefully yesterday in Monroe, Georgia at the age of 116.

Cooper was named the world’s oldest person in January of 2011, however the she was stripped of the title in May2011 when Guinness learned that Maria Valentin was 48 days older. Valentin died the next month, and Cooper regained the title.

Besse Cooper was the first Georgian to ever hold the world record. She was born in Tennessee and moved to Georgia during World War I.

The title of world’s oldest person now belongs to 115-year-old Dina Manfredini of Johnston, Iowa.

The oldest anyone is to have known to live is Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122-years-old and died in 1997.
