MSN is reporting that Irving based Hostess, the maker of Twinkies and Ding Dongs, is asking a U.S. bankruptcy judge for permission to liquidate if they don’t get enough of their striking workers to return by the end of today.
This is the latest move in the dispute between the 82-year-old company and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Unions. Members of those unions make up about 1/3 of Hostess 18,000 workers country wide.
The strike started to protest pay cuts Hostess had won the right to impose in bankruptcy court.
Hostess says if the strike continues they will have to close down the company for good. “We simply do not have the financial resources to survive an ongoing national strike,” Hostess Chief Executive Gregory Rayburn said in a statement.
Unless workers come back by the end of the day, the company will seek permission to liquidate, closing all operations by November 20th.
