Today’s Throwback Video of the Day is [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dio[/lastfm]’s “Holy Diver!!”

Because seriously, what’s cooler than a dude with a sword?!

After parting ways with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Black Sabbath[/lastfm] in 1982, singer Ronnie James Dio formed his own heavy metal band, Dio, with drummer Vinny Appice.  The following year, Dio scored a commercial hit with their debut album, Holy Diver.  It sold over a million copies in the States and peaked at No. 13 on the U.K. Albums chart.

The album’s title track was a success at rock radio and is one of the band’s most popular singles.  VH1 placed “Holy Diver” at No. 43 on their list of the Top 100 Hard Rock Songs.

The video was directed and edited by Arthur Ellis, and it featured Dio as a “barbarian” wandering through an abandoned church.
