Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle and Blazing Saddles‘ star, Alex Karras, is leading a lawsuit of 119 plaintiffs against the NFL.
Karras, who now suffers from dementia, and the other plaintiffs are suing the NFL for not properly educating and protecting players from concussions.
Karras, who was once suspended a full season from the NFL for gambling, is seeking medical monitoring, cognitive health benefits, and financial compensation for brain damaged suffered as a result of playing football.
Karras’s wife has released a statement that says, “Alex suffers from dementia but still enjoys many things, including watching football. But dementia prevents him from doing everyday activities such as driving, cooking, sports fishing, reading books and going to big events or traveling.”
She went on to add, “His constant complaint is dizziness — the result of multiple concussions. What Alex wants is for the game of football to be made safer and allow players and their families to enjoy a healthier, happier retirement.”
The four-time Pro Bowler went on to become an actor after his playing days were over. His two biggest were in Webster, and in Blazing Saddles,as Mongo a man who enjoyed cold-cocking horses.
