Today is [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bruce Willis[/lastfm]‘ 57th birthday!!
So in celebration, Jack FM is making his version of “Respect Yourself” our Song of the Day!!
Yep, another ’80s actor who wanted to be a rock star.
Born in West Germany and raised in New Jersey, Bruce Willis’ big break came in 1985 when he was cast opposite Cybill Shepherd in the ABC dramedy Moonlighting. The show ran for five seasons, and Willis won an Emmy for his work in the role of fast-talking detective David Addison.
In 1987, the actor branched out into music when he released his debut album, The Return of Bruno. A companion piece to an HBO special of the same name, The Return of Bruno was a pop-blues album that featured such backing musicians as [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Booker T. Jones[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Pointer Sisters[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Temptations[/lastfm]. Surprisingly, the album was a moderate commercial success, peaking at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and producing the Top 5 hit “Respect Yourself.” Other singles included “Young Blood” and “Under the Boardwalk,” which climbed all the way to No. 2 on the U.K. Singles chart. His second album, If It Don’t Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger, followed in ’89.
Bruce Willis has since starred in several box-office blockbusters, including Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, Armageddon and The Sixth Sense. To date, his movies have earned nearly $3 billion in the U.S., making him the ninth highest-grossing actor in a leading role.
He can next be seen on the big screen this fall in the action thriller The Cold Light of Day with Henry Cavill and Sigourney Weaver.
Check out this clip of Bruce performing “Under the Boardwalk” with The Temptations. Jack FM kinda forgot what he looked like with hair.
