Happy Birthday to singer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Peter Wolf[/lastfm]!!

And to mark the occasion, Jack FM is making “Love Stinks” by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The J. Geils Band[/lastfm] our Song of the Day!!

You know, love really does stink.  That’s why we’ve been single since 1979.

Formed in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1967, The J. Geils Band were one of the most popular touring acts of the ’70s.  Known for their energetic live shows and blues-infused style of rock n’ roll, the band played to packed venues across America while achieving moderate success on the Billboard Pop Singles chart with such songs as “Lookin’ for a Love,” “Give It To Me” and “Must of Got Lost.”

In April 1980, The J. Geils Band expanded their fan base with the release of the album Love Stinks.  It landed at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 and produced two Top 40 hits: “Come Back” and “Love Stinks,” a tongue-in-cheek rant against unrequited love.

Freeze Frame followed in ’81.  With its more pop-friendly sound, Freeze Fame catapulted The J. Geils Band to mainstream stardom, spending four weeks atop the Billboard 200 and selling over a million copies.  The single “Centerfold” was a No. 1 smash on both pop and rock radio, while the album’s title-track peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Videos for the two were also extremely popular on MTV, further broadening the band’s appeal to a bigger audience.

But in 1983 at the height of their commercial success, singer Peter Wolf abruptly left the group over creative differences.  The J. Geils Band released one more album, the disappointing You’re Gettin’ Even When I’m Gettin’ Odd, before disbanding in 1985.

Since then, the original members of The J. Geils Band have reunited periodically, playing a handful of shows here and there.  And in 2011, they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Remember the video for “Centerfold?”  Jack FM is still convinced that’s Martha Quinn in it.
