Happy Birthday to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Holly Johnson[/lastfm], lead singer of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Frankie Goes to Hollywood[/lastfm]!!

And yes, Jack FM is wearing our “Frankie Say Relax” t-shirt in celebration.

Formed in Liverpool, England in 1980, Frankie Goes to Hollywood first found success with the dance-pop anthem, “Relax.”  Released in October 1983, “Relax” at first failed to impact the U.K. Singles chart.  But when it was banned by the BBC for its sexually-suggestive lyrics, the song raced up the charts, spending five weeks at No. 1 and selling over a million copies.  In the U.S., “Relax” was just as popular.  It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is Jack’s Song of the Day.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood released their second single, “Two Tribes,” in May ’84.  Like “Relax,” “Two Tribes” was a commercial hit.  It spent nine weeks atop the U.K. Singles chart and moved more than one million copies.

Welcome to the Pleasuredome, the band’s debut album, followed five months later.  The double-LP landed at No. 1 in England and was certified triple-platinum.  The ballad “The Power of Love” became Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s third No. 1 hit, making them the second act in the history of the British music charts to have their first three singles reach the top spot.

In 1986, Frankie Goes to Hollywood released the grittier-sounding Liverpool.  While it did produce the Top 5 single “Rage Hard,” sales of the album paled in comparison to those of its predecessor, and in ’87 the band came to an end when singer Holly Johnson left because of musical differences.

Seventeen years later, the VH1 show Bands Reunited brought the original members of Frankie Goes to Hollywood together for a one-night only concert.  However, despite all hope, the reunion performance did not happen.

Remember the video for Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love?”  Yeah, neither does Jack FM.
