Happy Birthday to Martha Davis, lead singer of ’80s band [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Motels[/lastfm]!!

That’s one motel Jack FM wouldn’t mind checking into…

If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

That’s the motto singer Martha Davis abided by when creating The Motels.  After musical differences led to the band’s first breakup in 1977, Martha and guitarist Jeff Jourard decided to reform The Motels the following year.  Once the new lineup was in place, the band quickly became a favorite among L.A. music fans, and in ’79 they signed with Capitol Records.

A few months later, The Motels released their self-titled debut album.  Although it was a commercial disappointment in the States, The Motels was a hit in Australia.  There, the album peaked at No. 13 on the charts and spawned the Top 10 single “Total Control.”

The Motels’ first success in the U.S. came in 1982 with All Four One.  The album sold over 500,000 copies and landed at No. 16 on the Billboard 200.  “Only the Lonely,” which is Jack’s Song of the Day, received considerable airplay on both MTV and pop radio, where it was a Top 10 smash hit.  Other singles from the album included “Mission of Mercy,” “Take the L” and “Forever Mine.”

Little Robbers was released in ’83, and it proved The Motels were more than just one-trick ponies.  The album was certified gold in several countries, and the single “Suddenly Last Summer” gave the band their first and only No. 1 Mainstream Rock hit.

The Motels released one more album, Shock, before Davis announced in 1987 she was dissolving the band to pursue a solo career.

Ten years later, she reformed the band, calling this newer version The Motels featuring Martha Davis. Today, Davis continues to perform under that name with various musicians.

Check out the music video for The Motels’ “Shame.”  Sadly, it reminds Jack FM of all the walks-of-shame we’ve taken from similar motels in the middle of nowhere.
