Today is [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Madness[/lastfm] frontman Graham “Suggs” McPherson‘s birthday!!
And to celebrate, Jack FM is making “One Step Beyond” our Song of the Day!!
We’re just glad it’s not us who’s having a birthday on Friday the 13th.
British pop/ska band Madness first rose to fame in their native country with their 1979 debut album, One Step Beyond. It spent 37 weeks on the U.K. Albums chart, peaking at No. 2. The title track, which was originally written and recorded by Jamaican musician Prince Buster, was a Top 10 hit in England and also managed to make a small splash on the Billboard Club Play Singles chart. “One Step Beyond” is Jack’s Song of the Day.
But it wasn’t until 1983 that Madness scored the biggest hit of their career with “Our House.” The single, about the working class family lifestyle, was a success around the globe. In the U.S., “Our House” climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its video was a constant staple on MTV in the early ’80s.
Madness released two more albums, Keep Moving and Mad Not Mad, before musical differences led to their split in September 1986.
But just six years later, the band’s original lineup reunited for a concert in London, and they have continued touring and recording together ever since. In 2009, Madness released The Liberty of Norton Folgate. It peaked at No. 5 in Britain, becoming their highest-charting album in nearly 30 years.
Madness are currently scheduled to play at this year’s Coachella Festival in California.
