Happy Birthday to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Bangles[/lastfm]’ Vicki Peterson!!
Jack FM will always have a weakness for girls with guitars and big ’80s hair.
Formed in 1981, The Bangles were one of the more popular and successful girl bands to emerge from the MTV generation.
Led by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Susanna Hoffs[/lastfm] and sisters Debbi and Vicki Peterson, the L.A.-based band released their debut album, All Over the Place, in 1984. The album was a commercial disappointment, peaking at No. 80 on the Billboard 200.
Different Light followed two years later, and it gave The Bangles the big breakthrough they were looking for. With a more polished sound than its predecessor, Different Light sold over three million copies in the U.S. and landed at No. 2 on the charts. The album also produced three hit singles: “Manic Monday,” “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “If She Knew What She Wants,” which is Jack’s Song of the Day.
The band’s streak continued in ’87 when they recorded “Hazy Shade of Winter” for the movie Less Than Zero. Their version of the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Simon and Garfunkel[/lastfm] classic peaked at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, becoming one of their most popular singles.
The Bangles released their third studio album, Everything, and scored another No. 1 hit with the ballad “Eternal Flame” before friction within the band led to their breakup in 1989.
Ten years later, The Bangles reunited to record a song for the soundtrack to the movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and they have been together ever since. Today, The Bangles continue to tour and record, with 2011’s Sweetheart of the Sun their most recent release.
Here are The Bangles performing “Eternal Flame.” Jack FM once experienced burning similar to an eternal flame. Turns out we had a urinary tract infection.
