Jack FM would like to wish Tim Butler, bassist for [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Psychedelic Furs[/lastfm], a very happy birthday today!

And to celebrate, we’re making “The Ghost in You” our Song of the Day!

It must be a bummer having a birthday so close to Christmas… you totally get short-changed on the presents.

Formed in London by brothers Richard and Tim Butler, The Psychedelic Furs were just one of several bands to emerge from the British post-punk scene.  In 1980, they released their self-titled debut album.  The Psychedelic Furs peaked at #18 on the U.K. Albums chart and was also successful in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Australia.  However, the album failed to make an impact in the States.

Talk Talk Talk came in 1981, with Forever Now following a year later.  The latter, produced by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Todd Rundgren[/lastfm], spawned The Furs’ first U.S. mainstream hit, “Love My Way.”  The single reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and landed in the Top 40 on the Mainstream Rock chart as well.

In August 1984, The Psychedelic Furs released their fourth album, Mirror Moves.  It peaked at #43 on the Billboard 200, and the second single, “The Ghost in You,” was a moderate hit on pop radio.

1986 saw the band re-recording their earlier single, “Pretty in Pink,” for the John Hughes movie of the same name.  Both were big hits, and “Pretty in Pink” came to be known as The Furs’ signature song.

Riding high on the success of that single, The Psychedelic Furs released Midnight to Midnight in 1987.  It was the band’s highest-charting album in the U.S., peaking at #29 and producing the Top 40 hit “Heartbreak Beat.”

The Psychedelic Furs released two more albums before disbanding in 1991.  Ten years later, they reformed and continue to tour the world today.  The Furs spent the earlier part of 2011 on the road, performing their album Talk Talk Talk in its entirety.

Here are The Psychedelic Furs with an acoustic performance of “Love My Way.”  And seriously, Richard Butler… sunglasses?  It can’t be that bright with candles.
