Happy Birthday to ’80s pop singer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Kim Wilde[/lastfm]!!

And to celebrate, Jack FM is making “Kids in America” our Song of the Day.

Anybody else think it’s strange a British woman sang about kids in America?!

The eldest child of ’50s rock and roll singer Marty Wilde, Kim Wilde was first discovered singing backup for her brother.  In 1980, she was signed to the British label RAK Records and released her debut single, “Kids in America,” the following year.

Kids in America” was an instant smash in Europe.  Written by her father and brother, the song landed at #2 on the U.K. Singles chart and reached the Top 5 in both Germany and France.  “Kids in America” was a moderate success in the U.S., peaking at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.

Five years later, Kim Wilde scored an even bigger hit with “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.”  Adding a pop spin to the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Supremes[/lastfm]‘ Motown classic, Kim earned her first #1 single in the States and became only the fifth British female solo artist to top the Hot 100 chart.

Following the success of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” Kim’s popularity was once again on the rise, and in 1988, she released her biggest-selling album to date, Close.  It sold over two million copies worldwide and produced three Top 10 hits in the U.K.: “You Came,” “Never Trust a Stranger” and “Four Letter Word.”

Throughout the years, Kim Wilde has continued performing and recording.  Her most recent release was 2011’s Snapshots, an album featuring covers of songs from such artists as the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Cure[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Erasure[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Diana Ross[/lastfm] and the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Cars[/lastfm].

In addition to music, Kim has also enjoyed a rather successful landscaping career, winning several awards for her work.

Check out Kim Wilde performing “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.”  Just like those pesky chads from the 2000 presidential election.
