Legendary rocker [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bob Seger[/lastfm] just released a new single, “Hey Hey Going Back to Birmingham,” and Jack FM is making it our Song of the Day!
Is it just us, or does anyone else have the sudden urge to dance to “Old Time Rock and Roll” in their underwear?
Even though he was a popular artist in and around the Detroit area, Bob Seger struggled for years to achieve success on a national level. But that all changed in April 1976 when Bob and his band, The Silver Bullet Band, released the live album, Live Bullet. Recorded over two nights at Detroit’s Cobo Hall in September 1975, Live Bullet was the commercial breakthrough Bob had always yearned for. The album peaked at #34 and stayed on the charts for 168 weeks. With over five million copies sold, Live Bullet is one of the best-selling live albums of all time.
Bob Seger was on a roll. His next album, 1976′s Night Moves, was an even bigger success. Well-received by critics, it landed at #8 on the Billboard 200, becoming Bob’s first Top 10 album. The title-track was a Top 5 hit, and the album’s other singles, “Mainstreet” and “Rock and Roll Never Forgets,” also charted favorably.
Over the next ten years, Bob Seger continued to carve out his niche in rock history with such albums as Stranger in Town, Against the Wind and Like a Rock, each of which sold over a million copies. It was also during this time that Bob recorded and released some of his best-known songs: “Hollywood Nights,” “Old Time Rock and Roll,” “Against the Wind” and “Like a Rock.” In 1987, he scored his first and only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Shakedown” from the Beverly Hills Cop II soundtrack.
After the success of his Greatest Hits album in 1994, Bob Seger took a break from the music industry to spend time with his wife and two young children. He returned in 2005 as a guest vocalist on the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]3 Doors Down[/lastfm] song “Landing in London” and, a year later, released his sixteenth studio album, Face the Promise. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200, signaling the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s triumphant return to the charts. To date, Face the Promise has sold 1.2 million copies.
In November, Bob Seger will release Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets, a 2-CD compilation celebrating his career. The album will feature music both old and new, including “Hey Hey Going Back to Birmingham,” which is Jack’s Song of the Day. It is a remake of a 1956 song by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Little Richard[/lastfm].
Check out this live performance of “Hollywood Nights.” And yes, that was a big red chicken in the audience. It was, after all, the ’70s.
