Ah, the Friday before a three-day holiday weekend.
Why did Jack FM even bother showing up for work today? It’s not like we’re gonna get anything done.
Tennessee natives [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kings of Leon[/lastfm] really are a band of brothers.
Formed in 1999 by brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill, Kings of Leon have become one of the most successful rock bands of the new millennium.
In August 2003, the band released its debut album, Youth and Young Manhood. Even though the album made Kings of Leon overnight sensations across the Atlantic, it failed to attract mainstream attention in the U.S.
With their blend of Southern rock and blues, Kings of Leon continued releasing albums domestically and internationally. Over the years, they developed somewhat of a cult, grass roots-like following and became critical darlings. Their albums constantly topped critics’ best-of lists, and they even earned accolades from artists such as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elvis Costello[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bob Dylan[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Pearl Jam[/lastfm].
Everything was going great for Kings of Leon, but they still craved what they couldn’t get: commercial success in their home country.
That all changed in 2008 with the release of their fourth studio album, Only By the Night. Propelled by the singles “Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody,” the album sold 6.2 million copies worldwide, 1 million in the States alone It peaked at # 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The album’s second single, “Use Somebody,” made history when it became only the fourth song to ever top the Mainstream Top 40, Adult Top 40, Alternative, Pop, and Triple A charts. The song spent 57 weeks on the charts and was digitally downloaded over 3 million times. It earned Kings of Leon Grammys for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and Best Rock Song.
Kings of Leon had finally made it in the U.S., and they had done so in a big way.
Riding high on the success of Only By the Night, the band began work on its fifth studio album.
Come Around Sundown was released on October 19, 2010. It debuted at # 1 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and the U.K. The album’s fourth single, “Back Down South,” is Jack’s Song of the Day.
Kings of Leon are currently touring in support of the album and will be at the Gexa Energy Pavilion in Dallas July 29th.
Here’s the video for Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” It makes Jack FM wish we were rockstars.
